My Buffalo Garden Walk Experience

I just came back from my trip to Buffalo, where I visited my family and enjoyed the Buffalo Garden Walk. This annual event showcases the beauty and creativity of gardens in the city of Buffalo—300 to be exact. It’s a free, two-day event held every July. One of the highlights of the Buffalo Garden Walk is the opportunity to see different styles of gardens. From formal English gardens to whimsical cottage gardens, there is something for everyone. One of the many highlights for me was walking through the charming cottage gardens that the homeowners have created.

During the Buffalo Garden Walk, you can stroll through these enchanting cottage gardens, taking in the sweet scents of flowers in bloom—from roses and phlox to lavender and dahlias. Each garden was a charming and relaxing oasis.
What makes these cottage gardens so special is the personal touch that each homeowner puts into them. Most of the gardens I visited were tended by the homeowners themselves, who take pride in their gardens and were available to answer your questions, share their knowledge, and give you tips to create your own garden. It was 90 degrees on the day I was touring, so many of the homeowners were serving lemonade, water, wine, and even ice cream sandwiches, which was very much appreciated! Below are some of the photographs and highlights from the cottage gardens I toured.

I loved the charm of the small cottage homes, where gardens took up both the front and back of the homes, and in some cases, the plantings matched the whimsical house colors. There was no need for a lawnmower, and the gardens certainly kept the pollinators happy.

One backyard garden was filled with garden rooms completely made up of annuals in containers. Yes, you heard me right—no garden beds, no digging—just 150 pots planted anew every year.

I also was impressed by how even the small gardens featured water elements that were as charming as the cottages themselves.

You’ll be amazed at the beauty and charm that can be created with just a little bit of creativity and a love for gardening.

So if you’re looking for a bit of inspiration for your own garden, or if you love nature and the beauty of homes in this city, the Buffalo Garden Walk should be on your garden bucket list.
If you’ve never been to Buffalo, I highly recommend checking it out. Especially in the Summer! Below are a few of my favorite places.
Bar Bill Tavern – Can’t visit Buffalo without chicken wings!
Duff’s Famous Wings – Another great choice!
Buffalo AKG Art Museum – Modern and contemporary art with beautiful architecture.
Shakespeare in Delaware Park – Right next to AKG and the beautiful Delaware Olmstead Rose Garden is one of the oldest and second largest free Shakespeare festival in the country.
Canalside – Waterfront with lots of outdoor activities.
Spruce on Main – Cute local shop.
Tattered Tulip – Vintage and new goods or home and garden.
Dreaming of transforming my garden to look like these. And, I never thought Buffalo had such charming cottages. It’s definitely on my bucket list of places to visit.
Love to hear it, Marge!
