Holiday Blooms Indoors: How to Plant and Care for Amaryllis and Paperwhite Bulbs

As the days grow shorter and the garden settles into winter rest, it’s the perfect time to bring a touch of the season’s magic indoors. Few things brighten a cold day like the sight of Amaryllis or Paperwhite Narcissus blooming in full holiday splendor. These easy-to-grow bulbs promise festive color and fragrance right when we crave it most.

Why Plant Holiday Bulbs Indoors

For many cottage gardeners, forcing bulbs indoors bridges the quiet months between autumn cleanup and spring bloom. With just a bit of planning, you can have show- stopping Amaryllis blooms by Christmas and clusters of sweetly scented Paperwhites by Thanksgiving or New Year’s. Both are tender bulbs, which means they can’t withstand winter frost outdoors, but they thrive in containers indoors with minimal care.

Planting Amaryllis Bulbs

When to Plant:

Plant in late October through early December for blooms during the holiday season. Each bulb takes about 6–10 weeks from planting to flowering, depending on room temperature.

How to Plant:

  1. Choose a container about 6–8 inches wide with drainage holes.
  2. Fill halfway with a light, well-draining potting mix.
  3. Place the bulb so the top third is above the soil line.
  4. Water thoroughly once after planting, then sparingly until growth appears.
  5. Place in a warm, sunny spot (around 70°F) until the flower stalk emerges. Or you can just add water and put in a amaryllis vase linked below

Care Tips:

Once the flower buds form, move to a cooler, bright spot to prolong blooms. Rotate the pot occasionally to keep stems growing straight. Support tall stems with a stake if needed. After blooming, cut the flower stalk but leave the leaves to nourish the bulb.

For Next Year:

If you’d like to rebloom your amaryllis, move it outdoors after frost danger has passed. Fertilize regularly through summer, then bring it back indoors in early fall to rest for 8–10 weeks before starting again.

Forcing Paperwhite Bulbs

Paperwhites before planting

When to Plant:

Start planting in mid-to late October for blooms in 4–6 weeks. Plant a few every two weeks for continuous indoor blooms through January.

How to Plant:

You can grow Paperwhites in soil or water:

In soil: Fill a shallow bowl or pot with potting mix. Plant bulbs close together, leaving tips exposed. Water lightly.

In water: Use a glass container with pebbles or decorative stones. Nestle bulbs so they sit firmly with the base just touching the water, not submerged.

Care Tips:

  • Keep in a cool, bright place (60–65°F).
  • Add water as needed to maintain the level beneath the bulb base.
  • Once blooms appear, move to a slightly cooler area to extend flowering.
  • Paperwhites can grow tall and floppy. To prevent this, mix 1 part rubbing alcohol to 10 parts water after roots form. This slows growth and keeps stems sturdy. Also they can be very smelly so if you are buying bulbs the classic paperwhite variety (Ziva) has a very strong fragrance so I suggest Inbal or Wintersun if you can find them

Design Ideas for a Cottage Holiday Display

Group White Paperwhites with Amaryllis in shades of crimson, coral, blush, and my personal favorite white for an elegant cottage display. Add moss, pinecones, and ribbon around pots for a festive centerpiece. I linked one below for you. Use vintage bowls or teacups for small bulb arrangements. These are perfect for gifting or decorating mantels and windowsills.

Final Thoughts

Growing Amaryllis and Paperwhite bulbs indoors is a timeless way to celebrate the season. They’re simple to plant, rewarding to watch grow, and fill your home with life and beauty during the quiet winter months.
