10 of My Favorite Fall Plants for Containers (That Aren’t Mums!)

Welcome to September come with me as I start my autumn garden transition. When autumn rolls in, many people rush to fill their porch pots with mums. And while mums certainly have their place, there’s a whole world of other plants that can bring just as
much beauty—and often a little more longevity—to your fall containers. Here are 10 of my favorite plants to use in cottage-style fall arrangements that go beyond mums.
- Ornamental Kale & Cabbage
With their ruffled leaves in shades of purple, white, and green, these thrive in cool weather and only get prettier as the temperatures drop. They look especially charming paired with trailing ivy, creeping Jenny or pansies.

- Heuchera (Coral Bells)
The jewel-toned foliage of heuchera—think deep plum, amber, or caramel—brings rich autumnal color to containers. Their mounding habit makes them a perfect filler plant. I personally love Proven Winners wild berry, Wildrose, Apple Twist and ballgown to name a few. I transfer these perennials to the garden when I switch my planters out for winter.

- Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’
This plant is a fall superstar. Its dusky pink blooms deepen to rust and bronze as the season progresses, adding both texture and late color to your pots. I love that they are a pollinator magnet. Bees and butterflies love it and it extends pollinator activity in your
garden late into the season. Like the Heuchera, I transfer into my garden when I switch my planters for Winter.

- Ornamental Peppers
Compact and colorful, these peppers bring fiery shades of red, orange, yellow, and even black. They’re a playful addition that instantly says “fall.” I personally love the black pearl .

- Asters
These daisy-like flowers come in lovely purples, pinks, and whites, offering a softer alternative to mums while still delivering a burst of color in September and October.

- Anemone (Japanese Anemone)
Graceful and airy, fall-blooming anemones bring romantic cottage-garden charm to containers. Their delicate pink or white blooms float above foliage, adding movement and elegance to your fall displays. When the Anemones lose their color in mid to late October I transfer to the garden and replace with mums.

- Creeping Jenny (Lysimachia nummularia ‘Aurea’)
That cascade of chartreuse foliage spills beautifully over the edges of pots, pairing well with darker fall tones. It’s a perfect “spiller” plant to soften arrangements.

- Pansies & Violas
Cold-hardy and endlessly cheerful, pansies bloom in shades of plum, gold, and even near-black. They’re a tried-and-true favorite for fall, often lasting right through to Thanksgiving.

- Ornamental Grasses
Fountain grass, carex, Purple fountain grass or little bluestem add height, movement, and texture. A perfect thriller to your planter .Their plumes sway beautifully in the autumn breeze and contrast with richer foliage plants.

- Creeping Ivy
A timeless spiller, ivy softens the edges of containers while adding lush greenery that lasts well into the colder months. Pair it with ornamental cabbage or kale for an elegant, layered look.
Tips for Designing Fall Containers
- Mix thrillers, fillers, and spillers for balance and texture.
- Stick to a rich fall palette – plums, rusts, burgundy, amber, and chartreuse.
- Use evergreens like boxwood or dwarf conifers as anchors for season-long beauty.
- Don’t forget to add a few pumpkins or gourds around your pots for that extra autumn charm!
Fall doesn’t have to be all about mums. With the right mix of foliage, texture, and seasonal blooms, your containers can celebrate autumn in a way that feels fresh, unique, and timelessly cottage-inspired.
